"Conductor Daniela Musca leads the Malmö Opera's melodious orchestra with great vigour and infectious enthusiasm.”
"(Daniela Musca) conducts with flexibility, internal vigour and an awareness of the Nabucco-style Italian band sonorities on which much of the music rests.”
Acclaimed for her passionate interpretations and meticulous dedication to sound, Italian conductor Daniela Musca has established herself as a sophisticated force on the international symphonic and operatic stages. Her 2024 season was defined by two major Scandinavian premieres: leading a new production of Verdi’s Giovanna d’Arco at Malmö Opera and a highly successful Tosca at Wermland Opera.
The 2025–26 and 2026–27 seasons mark a period of significant international expansion. Following her previous successes with the Royal Stockholm Philharmonic and Royal Swedish Opera, Musca returns to Stockholm in autumn 2025 for a new production of Puccini’s Tosca at Folkoperan. Her North American debut follows in April 2026, conducting a new production of Il Barbiere di Siviglia at Calgary Opera. The 2026 season reaches a pinnacle in June with her debut at the Berliner Philharmonie leading the Berliner Symphoniker, followed by her debut at Opera Graz in the autumn.
Musca’s operatic authority is rooted in an extensive residency at the Hessisches Staatstheater Wiesbaden (2014–2018). Her deep understanding of the lyric stage was forged during her formative tenure at the Bayerische Staatsoper and the Staatsoper Unter den Linden, where she collaborated closely with Kent Nagano and Daniel Barenboim. This prestigious foundation informs her rigorous, vocal-centric approach to the podium today, as seen in her prize-winning Eugene Onegin at Staatstheater Darmstadt and her celebrated interpretation of Lehár’s Das Land des Lächelns at the Lehár Festival Bad Ischl.
Equally at home on the concert podium, Musca brings a unique narrative depth to the symphonic repertoire, eliciting a refined, lyrical quality from the ensembles she leads. Her guest conducting highlights include the Gothenburg Symphony, Malmö Symphony, Trondheim Symphony, and the Norwegian Radio Orchestra, with an upcoming return to the Helsingborg Symphony.
Her artistic identity is rooted in an elite instrumental background. A graduate of the Conservatorio di Santa Cecilia in Rome and the Musik-Akademie der Stadt Basel, she has collaborated as a pianist with legendary figures such as Dietrich Fischer-Dieskau and Júlia Várady, appearing as the featured pianist in the documentary film Le Passage du Flambeau. Her career is further distinguished by high-profile civic engagements, including her invitation to conduct the Democracy Festival in Berlin in 2024, honoring the 75th Anniversary of Germany's Constitutional Law. Her discography includes a critically acclaimed recording for BIS Records, and her leadership at the Carl Nielsen International Competition was broadcast worldwide on medici.tv.
